He had a goal disallowed towards the end of the first half in bizarre circumstances as the assistant's flag stayed down for an age but, beyond that, he led the line with consistency and commitment and his pressing was excellent. Sam Bell - 6 Much of City’s attacking focus was down the right which meant Bell didn’t have quite the same impact as previous matches but, like Wells and Sykes, constantly hounded the Hull defence and got through a ton of work off the ball.
Finding spaces at will, he’s looking more and more confident in the attacking midfield position, and combined especially well with Sykes. Max O'Leary saves from Aaron Connolly (Photo by Greig Cowie/REX/Shutterstock) Mark Sykes - 7 Fully justified his selection ahead of Cornick on the right and after a bit of a stuttering and disrupted start to the season looked the best version of Mark Sykes. Enjoyed so much space down that channel, helped by Knight and Tanner’s performances which ensured he gave Hull a constant headache and got round the back of Jacob Greaves on several occasions. That being said, he’d be frustrated he didn’t take that chance in the first half when he lifted over the bar from close range. Nahki Wells - 7 After that miss last weekend against Birmingham, there will be more than a degree of relief for the Bermudian to have found the target as he slid in at the far post to connect with Sykes’ low cross for the equaliser.
City player ratings vs Hull as O'Leary stands tall and Knight impresses againMax O’Leary - 8 His save to keep out Alfie Jones’ header basically kept City in the game, as he parried the ball onto his post. Then there was the tip over the bar from Scott Twine’s free-kick which you’d expect him to make but Aaron Connolly looked odds-on to score, when sent clear 1vs1, only for O’Leary to stand his ground and deny the Irish striker. They weren’t particularly outstanding saves but important stops in the context of the game, and his handling was consistently clean throughout. George Tanner - 7 Deserve huge credit for largely keeping Twine quiet. There were a few moments where the Burnley loanee threatened to leave Tanner standing but he kept to his task and rendered the midfielder a bit of an irrelevance in the overall game.

Zak Vyner - 6 He had his hand up in the air to apologise for Hull’s opener as Liam Delap burned past him down City’s left flank to set Ozan Tufan up for a simple finish. Thereafter, albeit with a few loose passes that caused a few hairy moments, he was largely composed and controlled. Kal Naismith - 7 Such an elegant player to watch and always looks fully in command of the situation even when he’s perhaps not (that’s a compliment). But what stood out from the Scot, in his first start at centre-back since January, was his long passing which was a joy to watch throughout and gave City another dimension in attack. He also kept his forays into midfield at a minimum.
Cam Pring - 6 Steady on the left and maybe if you were nit-picking you’d ask for a bit more thrust in the attacking third. But he had Adama Traore to worry about with the winger a constant threat on that side of the field. Matty James - 7 He wasn’t helped by a few hospital passes in midfield that left him exposed but otherwise this was an accomplished display by the captain.
His cover defending once again stood out with a number of key interventions as various Hull players were shaping to shoot. One lung-busting run in the first-half also denied Tufan on the counter. Joe Williams - 7 He may or may not want to see that chance again as Williams lifted over the bar when he had an unguarded net in front of him but his energy was, as ever, a huge asset in midfield and he continually had City on the front foot. Jason Knight - 8 His performance dipped in the final 15 minutes as Pearson re-jigged the system to the point he was almost playing in an unfamiliar forward role but the Irishman was brilliant up to that point; bright and inventive, with guile and aggression and looking to take men on either on the dribble or exchanging passes.
