One of the most famous experiments in the behavioral sciences, Stanley Milgram’s (1963) experiment is widely considered to be a classic. The experiment was conducted to investigate whether the majority of people would be willing to deliver an electric shock to another person if instructed to do so. In this experiment, the human subject was instructed to administer increasingly severe levels of electric shock to another person, based on the instructions of an authority figure. Each time, the subject was asked to administer the electric shock with a greater force. There were three phases to the experiment; in each phase the model was to receive shocks from a different person. In the first phase, the subject would only be asked to administer the shock once. In the second and third phases, the subject was instructed to administer shocks each time the other person asked for a shock. The experiment was terminated when the subject refused to administer the experimenter’s instructions and refused to continue. The experimenter was aware that the person who asked for shocks was willing to receive shocks and that he or she was not receiving real electric shocks. The experiment was conducted in three different cities in the United States: Pittsburgh, New Jersey, and San Francisco.

More recently, another experiment (also presented in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B in 2021), was conducted with preteen children. Children and their caregivers were given a choice between two cheeseburgers and both kids and their caregiver (including the child’s mother) could eat either one and the child could also eat a third burger. The researchers told the caregiver to give the cheeseburger to the child or to not eat it. In this study, the caregiver often ate the cheeseburger and this caused the child to not have enough to eat which resulted in the child saying: “Don’t eat it”,”I’m not hungry,” “This is no good,” “I want more.” The caregiver ate the cheeseburger without looking at the child and when the caregiver gave the cheeseburger to the child, the child ate it, even though it was not his favorite food and he didn’t feel hungry. The caregiver ate the cheeseburger which caused the child to not eat. This last experiment shows how we all make “hot” emotional decisions about each other and suggests that our emotions can be contagious.

Yet, what these experiments don’t show is the complexity of human social interactions in which all parties involved in the situation have their own motivations and interests and each individual is motivated to learn and change.
